Resurrection of the Classic: Exploring the Modern Werewolf phenomenon
Ur vicious werewolf fever dream comin' alive, baby! Werewolves ain't just a rehash of horror tales y'all love. It's a fresh breed of beast hangin' onto the essence of the 80s classics like The Howling, An American Werewolf in London, and Silver Bullet.
Step back into the world of terrifying transformations, nerve-wrackin' action, and tangible contagion fears. This time, global supermoons set the stage for your loved ones to turn into snarling, flesh-ripper monsters.
Helmed by Steven C. Miller and scribbled by Matthew Kennedy, these demented doggo machinists take you on an adventure that amps up the genre and offers powerful performances, killer creatures, and ol'-school practical effects.
Every rotation of the lunartimer brings a harassed underdog tale swirling around ex-soldier scientist, Dr. Wesley Marshall. With stunning set pieces and heart-poundin' suspense, this film fearlessly leads the pack, lavishing you with rip-roarin' action, thrilling invasions of suburbia, and richly-sketched legends.
Steven C. Miller, child of the 80s, say, "I solemnly swore to hurl practical effects into the faces of audiences, 'cus I grew up on 'em in 80s horror flicks! That's what I aimed for with Werewolves. It was my destiny, since I was born in the sacred 81, when wolf flicks like The Howling et al ruled the box office."
Myles Nestel, guru of the horror realm, comments, "We're marrying the energy of punk to the film – it's ferocious! No CGI monstrosities here; we opted for real effects. It's indie, but we wanted to show the best practical effin' werewolves on the planet! We wanna give fans an immersive experience – make 'em believe they could stroke these freaky fiends."
Steven C. Miller, venerable director of action rollercoasters like Line of Duty, Escape Plan 2: Hades, First Kill, and Marauders, masterminded this rambunctious production.
We're gonna take you into a hair-raisin' apocalypse filled with shudder-worthy transformations, edge-of-your-seat tension, and brutal creature design. This beast ain't relentin' until the credits roll. Enjoy the insane adrenaline rush – we ain't lettin' the pedal off!
During those bone-tinglin' periods 'neath the supermoon, a slumberin' gene hidden within every human wakes up, transformin' those catchin' moonlight into hairy humanoid hellhounds. Havoc ensued, claimin' close to a billion lives in the process. Now, one year on, the next supermoon arrives, and our heroes are ready to take action.
Steven C. Miller explains his approach to when switches from man to wolf: "I peeped at classics like An American Werewolf in London and The Howling – rightly so! Plus, I scanned Silver Bullet and that testerone-pumpin' Scottish flick called Dog Soldiers. The way those freaky furballs scampered caught my eye, so we studied every horror flick, savorin' the flavors and craftin' somethin' new and tasty."
He adds cheekily, "I weren't tryna reinvent the warpaint of werewolves. But since we ain't seen attention-grabbin' practical effin' werewolves in a while, I wanted to jazz things up – breathe new life into the lycanthrope legends. Make 'em feel slicker, wickeder, and more gnarly."
Shots of the creatures not fully unleashed help maintain a sense of mystery and dread. Their presence feels enormous whenever they appear, adding to the suspense and terror of the confrontations.
The creative process behind bringin' these beasts to life involved workin' hand-in-paw with skilled artists such as Richard Mayberry (Painter/Creature Effects), Ricky Diadone (Key Makeup Artist), Peter Murphy (Sculptor and Painter for Creature Effects), Marielena Ramirez (Makeup Department Head), Jen Roomes (Painter & Fabricator/Creature Effects), and Sara Villareal (Special Makeup Effects Artist). They collaborated across various departments to craft a thrilling creature design that'd make the scope of the werenwolves implausible furry freaks come alive.
This bloodcurdlin' 80s throwback is shapin' up to be the next big indie horror phenomenon – we might even see more of these werewolves in future productions.
