So, what's so special about Spikeball? It's as easy as it is fun, says Marc Friedman '25, a Bronx Science student and avid Spikeball enthusiast. With few rules and different levels of intensity, it's a sport for everyone. For under $100 USD, you can have your own portable sport with all the equipment you'll ever need, without any extra costs or equipment advantages like in soccer or basketball.
Spikeball is versatile and playable on any surface. While it's designed for teams of two, you can also play with three or one-on-ones, without altering the setup. It's this flexibility that makes Spikeball a valuable option for anyone seeking a fun outdoor activity.
Popular Among the Youth
A survey conducted among 135 Bronx Science students revealed that 64.4% of them have played Spikeball. Those who have given it a try rated it pretty highly, with a notable average rating of 5.87. Although 9% of students gave it the lowest score possible, the majority seemed to enjoy the sport.
Like every sport, not everyone will love Spikeball. But its average rating by students indicates that it's more than worthy of a spot in the high school sports hall of fame.
The History of Spikeball
Spikeball's origins can be traced back to Jeff Knurik, the sport's original creator. He began with a hula hoop net, bouncing various balls off it before ultimately engineering a new ball for a new future. Although his initial company failed, Knurik's experimentation and refinement of the equipment laid the groundwork for what Spikeball is today.
While Tomy's initial failure is significant, Ruder's leadership as CEO transformed Spikeball into a successful business, rebranding it and significantly increasing its player base worldwide. His vision helped breathe new life into forgotten ideas, demonstrating the power of innovation.
The Duality of Spikeball
At the high school level, Spikeball serves as an inclusive sport, often featured in physical education classes. However, at the college level, it can appear exclusive, much like men's football and lacrosse, often associated with fraternity culture. This duality highlights the ongoing conversation about accessibility and inclusivity in sports.
As Spikeball continues to gain traction, the community becomes more accepting, much like what happens with most sports over time. Maybe the same is in store for Spikeball.

Despite the social dynamics that may complicate its reputation, Spikeball is a sport for everyone. With its simplicity, it's easy to learn and play at different skill levels. And the best part? In 2013, the company started earning an annual revenue of 1 million dollars; in 2023, that number had skyrocketed to 19 million.
