In the aftermath of the Gaza Strip military action, the Union faction in the Bundestag, fronted by Armin Laschet, the CDU chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, remains resolute in their decision not to restrict arms exports to Israel. "Arms will continue to flow," Laschet asserted during a heated parliamentary debate. "No sanctions will be imposed against Israel," he reiterated, emphasizing the current precarious state of the beleaguered nation.
While the SPD, coalition partners and the federal government, have articulated a more measured response, expressing the need to scrutinize each arms delivery to ensure they are aiding Israel's defense and not being used to breach international law[1]. The Greens' Max Lucks, advocated for limiting deliveries to prevent German weapons from contributing to the conflict in Gaza or the West Bank.
The debate, attended by Laith Arafeh, representative of the Palestinian Authority in Germany, underscored the political divide. The Left Party's chairwoman Ines Schwerdtner passionately urged an immediate halt to all arms exports to Israel, calling the ongoing violence "disproportionate" and devoid of any semblance of self-defense.
However, others, like the deputy AfD faction leader Beatrix von Storch, maintained that no country could tolerate such a persistent terrorist threat to its citizens.
Several factors could influence the CDU's stance, including historical and political ties[2], internal party dynamics, and the bigger geopolitical picture. The SPD, with their calls for scrutiny, may reveal a nuanced stance within the German government, balancing humanitarian concerns with international obligations. Yet, regardless of the nuances, the debates shed light on the ongoing political tensions surrounding Israel's actions and the global response to it.
