Responsive Proposal in Regards to AI and Copyright Inquisition
The delicate balance between technological advancement and copyright protection in the creative sector is under scrutiny, as the UK government deliberates on AI incorporation and copyright laws. Creative PEC has submitted their insights to the UK Government's AI and Copyright Consultation, which can be downloaded below.
The submission underscores the critical role of copyright protection in fostering growth within the creative industries. It also highlights the significance of considering the AI sector's expansion needs.
The submission addresses the government's preferred option for a text and data mining exception, complete with an 'opt-out' and transparency measures. However, concerns are raised about the enforcing, technical feasibility, and potential risks of undermining creators' and rights holders' commercialization of intellectual property.
Evidence gaps and the need for further research are pointed out in the submission. It also advocates for evidence-based decisions to safeguard the creative industries.
In addition to the submission, a summary report of the Industry Insights roundtable discussion about AI and copyright is also available.
The submission was penned by Policy Adviser Nik Gunn, Creative PEC Director Prof Hasan Bakhshi, and Head of Policy Bernard Hay.
