Resorts in Krasnodar region temporarily halt operations due to drone assault
In a series of unexpected events, the Kuban region of Russia has been thrown into a state of heightened security following a series of drone attacks on August 7-8, 2025.
The most affected area has been the Krasnodar region, with a "drone danger" alert declared on August 8. The situation in Sochi was particularly tense, with authorities reminding residents about the ban on filming the work of air defense, drone flights or crashes, and their debris. As a result, Sochi Airport temporarily suspended flights, and temporary restrictions on air traffic were imposed.
Gelendzhik Airport also faced similar disruptions due to the restrictions, with temporary restrictions on receiving and sending aircraft. Passengers were asked to understand the situation, pay attention to announcements, and avoid blocking seats with belongings.
The alert was broadcast through various channels, including the Russian EMERCOM app, SMS, and warning systems in resort cities. The authorities warned that recording PVO activity and publishing such materials can hinder military operations and harm city security.
In total, 13 drones were shot down over Russia during this time, with incidents also reported in the Orel, Kursk, and Tula regions. Two drones were intercepted and another was destroyed over the Azov Sea from 09:45 to 11:15.
The disruptions extended beyond airports, with Kuban's oil refineries also becoming targets. The Afipsky refinery near Slavyansk-on-Kuban suffered fires and damage from drone debris. The incident was classified as a severe industrial emergency but was quickly contained by emergency services.
In response to these events, Mother and child rooms have been opened in Sochi Airport terminals, and water fountains have been installed near restrooms. Sirens in Anapa warned of the start of anti-aircraft defense systems. Those who found themselves on the street during the alarm were advised to go to the basement, ground floor, or underground passage.
Airlines have warned passengers about potential delays, and residents and tourists were advised to move away from windows, take shelter in safe rooms, and call 112 if they spotted a drone. The restrictions were announced by Rosaviatsiya and were necessary to ensure flight safety.
The ongoing drone attacks have caused significant disruption in the Kuban region, with airports facing heightened security measures and flight cancellations. Oil refineries and related facilities have also suffered damage, contributing to regional instability and ongoing security concerns.
