Residing in Strawberry Mansion and seeking a 'cool roof' coating? Here's your guide to acquiring one at no cost.
In an effort to combat rising temperatures and energy costs, a cool roofs pilot program is set to be launched in Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion neighbourhood. This initiative, a joint project between a nonprofit organisation and the city, is part of the "our website News Climate Desk" focusing on news and solutions for a changing region.
The pilot program aims to test the effectiveness of cool roofs on 150 homes within the 19121 and 19132 ZIP codes. Cool roof coatings, often white in colour, are designed to reflect more of the sun's energy than traditional dark roofs, reducing the temperature inside homes and saving energy.
Homeowners and renters in Strawberry Mansion can apply for the program. For homeowners, applications can be submitted by email to [email protected] or through the Energy Coordinating Agency's website. Renters, however, will need notarized consent from their landlords to participate.
To be eligible, roofs should be in fairly good condition. Those that require significant repairs will likely be rejected and referred to other home repair programs. The project also plans to coat roofs on entire blocks to monitor the temperature outside of homes.
The project's goals extend beyond individual homes. It aims to test whether clusters of cool roofs can reduce the urban heat island effect and lower ambient temperatures in Strawberry Mansion overall. The Energy Coordinating Agency will monitor the temperature in some homes and analyze utility bills to track the coatings' effectiveness at cooling homes and reducing the need for air conditioning.
There are no income restrictions on the program, making it accessible to all residents of Strawberry Mansion. For those who prefer in-person applications, the Strawberry Mansion Neighborhood Action Center offers the application as well.
This innovative pilot program could pave the way for wider adoption of cool roofs in Philadelphia and beyond, contributing to a more energy-efficient and cooler city in the face of a changing climate.
