Residents want sinkhole solution, HOA says it could cost more than $100K

Residents at Decatur’s Abbey Road Condominiums are facing yet another sinkhole crisis. A fresh collapse near the community pool has deepened concerns, with sewage leaks adding to the problem. The Homeowners Association (HOA) now plans to raise fees to cover costly repairs.

Sinkholes have plagued the complex for years, and the latest one—around 30 feet deep and wide—has reappeared near Michele Brown’s unit. Previous patching attempts failed, and this time, the collapse has damaged underground pipes, causing sewage leaks. The HOA blames erosion around ageing infrastructure for the ongoing issue.

On 14 March 2025, Board President Sarah Martinez announced that repair costs could reach between $140,000 and $200,000. To fund the work, the HOA will increase condominium fees. Some residents, like Brown, are now considering moving out due to the persistent problems. The association has urged all homeowners to review their bylaws and financial records. Understanding shared responsibilities and preparing for unexpected repair costs has become a priority for many in the community.

With repairs set to begin soon, residents will see higher fees in the coming months. The HOA continues to explore additional funding options while addressing the immediate risks. For now, the focus remains on stabilising the affected areas and preventing further damage.
