Residents of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills urged to immediately shut off their water taps by L.A. authorities.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has announced that water service has been restored in parts of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills, following a major outage caused by a broken valve. However, a Boil Water Notice remains in effect due to ongoing water quality testing[1].

The outage, which initially affected approximately 9,200 households, occurred on Tuesday when a water control valve broke and failed to reopen, cutting off flow to the 54-inch-diameter pipe that feeds the area[2]. The outage took place amidst a heatwave, with temperatures in the 90s to low 100s[3].

LADWP crews have been working tirelessly to replace the broken valve and weld a new section of pipe, sometimes 20 feet underground and near critical infrastructure such as oil pipelines, a fiber optic line, and a gas line[2][3]. The repairs have been complex, but the water system is now aimed to be fixed by early Monday morning[2].

During the outage, residents were urged not to use tap water to avoid delaying repairs and water system repressurization. This included refraining from flushing toilets and watering lawns, which was emphasized as crucial to restoring service faster[3].

The Boil Water Notice was issued shortly after the shutdown began, as consuming untreated water could cause stomach or intestinal illness[4]. The city has provided bottled water, opened five sites for residents to shower and do laundry, and distributed thousands of free cases of water to help residents cope[4].

As of August 11, residents can now use tap water for basic domestic uses like showering and flushing, but they must boil it before drinking or cooking until testing confirms the water's safety[1]. The LADWP thanks residents for their patience and cooperation, which helped crews complete hazardous repairs under very hot conditions[1].

In addition to the repairs, LADWP crews have been working to fill and pressurize a large water tank serving the area, and have excavated 85% of the area and have begun digging by hand around the valve to ensure critical infrastructures are not affected[2].

Residents are advised to continue following the Boil Water Notice and to monitor updates from the LADWP for further information. The LADWP will provide updates as the water quality testing progresses and the Boil Water Notice is lifted.
