Residents of Memphis Concur: City Struggles with High Crime Rates

In the summer of 2025, Memphis, Tennessee, has been grappling with a surge in violent crimes. Reports of carjackings and shootings have been on the rise, leaving residents feeling uneasy and on high alert.

On July 28, two men were reported to have shot up a home on Wharfside Drive, according to the police. A few days later, on August 5, an Uber driver was pepper-sprayed and carjacked by a group at a Memphis cemetery. These incidents were followed by another carjacking outside a grocery store on August 14, where a woman was carjacked at gunpoint.

The carjacking trend continued on August 15, with two reported incidents that left Memphis residents extra vigilant, as per WMC-TV. On the same day, three men were shot in a car by a group of people on the side of the road, as reported by MPD and WHBQ-TV.

In a tragic turn of events, an elderly woman was bodyslammed during a carjacking at a movie theater on August 14, as reported by WMC-TV. Three days later, on August 17, an 18-year-old was accused of carjacking a couple and trying to rob a man, as reported by WREG-TV.

The carjacking spree did not end there. On August 19, a woman and her friend were robbed, followed, and carjacked in Orange Mound, according to WHBQ-TV. Two days later, on August 20, drive-by shootings were reported in Oakhaven, as per MPD and WMC-TV.

The carjacking of a wing restaurant owner on July 9, where he was shot in the back while closing up shop, and the shootout that ended in a man's death and several homes being shot up in Memphis on August 11, are just a few of the many incidents that have shaken the city.

To combat the rising crime, John Drake, the head of the crime prevention organization in Memphis, has been advocating for more ground personnel. On a more positive note, a man was arrested after a drive-by outside an apartment complex on June 30, and another was sentenced to 18 years for a driveway carjacking and shooting of a 60-year-old on July 29.

Despite these arrests, the city continues to grapple with the wave of crime. On September 5, a man was charged with aggravated assault after a shooting in a Hickory Hill apartment left three injured, and a man was charged with murder after a shooting at Wendy's, as per MPD and WMC-TV.

The violence did not subside in September. On September 6, two men were wanted in a carjacking attempt in Raleigh, and an 18-year-old Memphian was charged with a drive-by shooting that hospitalized a woman on September 11. Up to 40 shots were fired during a drive-by shooting that injured two people on August 6, and a deadly shootout was caught on camera in Frayser on August 10.

In a tragic end to the month, a woman died in a southeast Shelby County shooting, as reported by SCSO, WHBQ-TV on July 17. Three shooting suspects were charged after a chase from Berclair into Southaven, with one victim being critical, as reported by WMC-TV and WHBQ-TV on July 7.

As Memphis continues to grapple with these incidents, the city's residents and law enforcement remain vigilant, hoping for a decrease in crime and a return to peace and safety.
