Residents of Gaza City express apprehension as Israeli forces push forward with their advancement, declaring their preference to meet their end in their local community.

In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the past few days have been marked by a series of significant events. On Tuesday, an air strike claimed the lives of five individuals in a vehicle as they were leaving Gaza for the south. This tragedy brings the Palestinian death toll from the two-year war to over 65,000. A UN commission of inquiry, announced on the same day, concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel swiftly denounced the assessment, labeling it 'scandalous' and 'fake'. The Israeli military is reportedly aiming to empty Gaza City of civilians and confront thousands of Hamas combatants. In an attempt to facilitate this, the military announced the opening of an additional 48-hour route for Palestinians to leave Gaza City. However, many Palestinians are reluctant to do so due to dangers along the way, lack of food in the southern area, and fear of permanent displacement. The Gaza media office reports that 190,000 Palestinians have headed south and 350,000 have moved to central and western areas of the city. The official expects about 100,000 civilians to remain in Gaza City, which could take months to capture. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the report of a drone attack on the Rantisi children's hospital. The Hamas-run government's ministry of health reported that an Israeli drone dropped grenades on one floor of the hospital, but no casualties were reported. The United Nations, aid groups, and foreign governments have condemned Israel's offensive and the proposed mass displacement. The Israeli official stated that the military operations are focused on getting civilians to head south. In leaflets, the military announced the reopening of Salahudin Road for Palestinians to escape towards the south and have until lunchtime on Friday to do so. The attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the conflict between Israel and Hamas, were launched by the terrorist organization Hamas. No major advance was reported a day after Israel announced the launch of its ground offensive to seize control of Gaza's main urban centre. Palestinian and UN officials say no place is safe, including in the southern area designated by Israel as a 'humanitarian zone'. At least 50 people were killed by Israeli strikes and gunfire across the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. The prospects of a ceasefire appear remote after Israel attacked Hamas political leaders in Doha last week. The operation could be suspended if a ceasefire is reached with Hamas, but for now, the stalemate continues in Gaza.
