Rescuers successfully extract hikers from a dangerous location in Nesskriður
In the heart of Iceland's rugged landscape, the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR, or Landsbjörg) demonstrated their expertise in a recent rescue operation near Siglufjörður.
Last night, search and rescue teams were called out to the Nesskriður area following reports of hikers in distress. The operation, which took place earlier this evening, saw rescue personnel brought ashore in inflatable boats, while the rescue vessel Sigurvin was used to transport rescuers out into Siglufjörður.
Upon reaching the hikers, it was confirmed that they were unharmed but feeling fatigued and cold. A decision was made to guide the hikers a bit farther north for a safer descent route.
The operation, coordinated by ICE-SAR, involved teams from Eyjafjörður and Siglufjörður. Ropes and safety anchors were set up for the descent down to the shore, ensuring the safety of all involved. The rescuers climbed the slope to reach the hikers, and the operation went smoothly.
ICE-SAR's operations often take place in challenging and hazardous environments, such as avalanches, mountainous terrain, and harsh weather conditions. In such situations, the association relies on a series of common safety precautions and specific equipment to ensure the successful and safe execution of their missions.
In the Nesskriður incident, essential equipment included avalanche transceivers, probes, shovels, search dogs, cold weather gear, safety helmets, radios, GPS devices, and vehicles adapted for mountain terrain. The use of these tools, coupled with thorough risk management and structured communication and command protocols, enabled ICE-SAR to conduct an effective and safe avalanche rescue operation under demanding Icelandic conditions.
The Nesskriður incident underscores ICE-SAR's commitment to ensuring the safety of those who find themselves in distress in Iceland's wild and unpredictable landscapes. Their professionalism and dedication to their mission continue to make a significant difference in the lives of many.
Despite the challenging environment, ICE-SAR's expertise was shown once again during the operation in Nesskriður, demonstrating that they aren't just limited to rescuing in rugged landscapes, but also excel in sports such as mountain climbing and hiking. The commendable work of these teams showcases a vital aspect of Iceland's tourist industry, ensuring the safety of visitors who choose to explore the country's breathtaking sports terrains.
