News Brief: Three Indian Men Rescued from Iranian Captivity

Three lads hailing from different districts of Punjab - Amritpal Singh, Jaspal Singh, and Hushanpreet Singh - found themselves in a pickle after they landed in Tehran on May 2. They were lured by a travel agency with promises of a safe passage to Australia, that route being far from legal.

After a month-long ordeal, they were finally rescued by the Tehran police, reports the Iranian Embassy in India. The three men were initially held captive by kidnappers linked to suspicious agents based in Pakistan.

The families of the victims had lost touch with their loved ones and, upon receiving ransom demands, approached the Indian government for help. It was then that the matter was escalated to the Indian Embassy in Iran, who spoke with their Iranian counterparts regarding this grave matter.

Amritpal managed to contact his family this Tuesday, reporting that he was safe and receiving medical attention. He confirmed that the kidnappers had been detained by the police.

The family of 33-year-old Jaspal Singh also received news of his safe return, alleviating their concerns after a nerve-wracking month. The authorities are working on procuring new passports for the safe return of the three men to their homeland.

Hushanpreet Singh's family learned about his rescue from news channels. His family spoke with him on Monday, confirming he and the other kidnapped individuals had been safe and were now in police custody, thanks to the timely intervention of the Tehran police.

The increasing number of incidents like this has raised concerns about the activities of unauthorized travel agents, promising overseas opportunities. The authorities are now intensifying their efforts to uncover these illicit operations and bring those involved to justice.

Background: The incident is said to be linked to a fraudulent travel agency in Punjab that enticed the victims with promises of well-paying jobs in Australia and a safe route via Iran. This route, referred to as the 'dunki' route, involves unauthorized travel agents who promise safe passage and employment abroad, but often prove to be far from legitimate.
