Rescued humpback whale swims free after stranding in Lübeck Bay

A humpback whale stranded in Lübeck Bay near Timmendorfer Strand since Monday has been successfully freed. After dredging a channel, the animal swam into deeper waters overnight and is now being escorted by coast guard and police boats toward Denmark and the Atlantic.

Meanwhile, Sea Shepherd Germany has launched a public donation campaign to support its rescue efforts. A digital advertising space at a central station now displays a QR code linking directly to the organisation's donation account.

The whale's stranding drew immediate attention from Sea Shepherd, a long-standing marine conservation group founded by Paul Watson. The organisation has been monitoring the situation and assisting with protective measures. Experts suggest that collapsing krill populations are forcing whales into riskier coastal waters in search of food.

To raise funds, Hamburg-based agency The Ranch initiated a campaign linking media coverage of the whale to direct donations. The operators of the advertising space provided the platform free of charge, ensuring all contributions go to Sea Shepherd's rescue work. The organisation, known for its bold tactics against ocean exploitation, relies entirely on public support for such operations. While the rescue effort progresses, tensions remain between conservation groups and regions where whale hunting is considered cultural heritage. Denmark's Faroe Islands, for instance, have previously pursued legal action against Sea Shepherd over its opposition to traditional hunts.

The humpback whale is now moving toward safer waters with no reported disruptions to local fishing or shipping. Sea Shepherd's donation campaign continues, with the public able to contribute instantly via the displayed QR code. The incident highlights both the challenges facing marine life and the ongoing reliance on public funding for conservation efforts.
