Rescue worker, formerly a footballer from Gaza, reveals harrowing experiences of locating disaster victims

In the heart of Gaza city, amidst the relentless conflict that has gripped the region since October 2023, a 24-year-old paramedic named Noah Al Shaghnoubi continues to risk his life daily. A former footballer and gymnast, Noah has transformed into a beacon of hope, using his athletic strength and agility to save lives as a rescuer with the Palestinian Civil Defence.

Noah has become synonymous with bravery, repeatedly venturing into dangerous and hard-to-reach places to pull survivors from the rubble caused by Israeli airstrikes and shelling. His tireless efforts have seen him involved in hundreds of rescue missions, each one etching its mark on his soul.

One mission that has left an indelible imprint on Noah's memory is the rescue of Yousef Hassouna, a mission that took place at the Dar Al Arqam school in April this year. The video footage of the rescue, which spread worldwide, served as a poignant reminder of Gaza's cry for help.

Despite sustaining multiple wounds during the war, Noah's commitment to humanity remains unwavering. This was evident when he was injured by a repeat Israeli strike moments after saving survivors in the Al Zeitoun neighbourhood. Yet, he persists in returning to the frontlines, driven by a desire to help those in need.

Noah's impact is significant in Gaza's ongoing crisis, not just as a symbol of resilience but also as an essential figure in saving lives amidst the relentless bombings. His raw, unfiltered videos, which have reached millions and drawn hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, serve as a testament to his dedication.

However, Noah's work is not without its challenges. He often works alone for extended periods, often for five or six hours at a stretch, and laments the lack of proper equipment, medical supplies, and personnel for the Civil Defence, stating that it costs lives.

The Civil Defence has sadly announced the death of another member, bringing the death toll among its ranks to 137. Despite the constant targeting of rescue teams, Noah refuses to leave northern Gaza, choosing to stand firm in the face of Israeli bombardment and the blockade on aid that has caused severe levels of hunger.

Noah's memories from his rescue missions are ones he cannot erase, haunted by the child's last breath and the mother's screams. Yet, he continues to film, determined to show the world Gaza's plight under an unrelenting Israeli onslaught. His personal ambitions are currently on hold due to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, but his hope for peace remains steadfast.

In the face of adversity, Noah Al Shaghnoubi stands as a testament to the human spirit's resilience. His story serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there are those who choose to stand up and make a difference. Noah's courage and determination are a beacon of hope for many, and his work continues to inspire those who bear witness to his selfless acts.
