In a showcase of resilience and skill, Sochi's search and rescue team snatched the silver medal at the regional multi-discipline competitions held in Krasnodar. With the backdrop of the "Kuban-SPA" training complex, the event honored the legend, Hero of Labor of Kuban, Petr Shepelkov, the founder of the service.
With 24 powerhouse teams in the fray, the team from Sochi battled it out in challenging tasks designed to test their mettle. Climbing a 20-meter incline using climbing gear, scaling a climbing wall, and extracting and relocating a casualty were just a few of the complex tasks that left eyes glued and hearts racing. The judges imposed strict supervision, scrutinizing their every move, as limited equipment made the tasks even more daunting.
"The evaluation wasn't just about speed, but also the precision in completing the tasks," underlined Dmitry Zentsov, head of the Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Department of the Sochi City Administration. "In a crisis, time is gold, and well-organized and coordinated efforts could well mean the difference between life and death."
Sochi's emergency response teams stand tall at three tiers: federal, regional, and municipal. Established in 2010, Sochi's Emergency Service continues its relentless expansion, setting a current staff count of 114, a significant surge from 2022's 94 personnel. Last year alone, 52 rescuers sharpened their skills with additional qualifications, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.
The story of Sochi's rescuers is a tale of dedication and perseverance. In 2024, they rose to the challenge, making over 1400 emergency responses, executing rescue missions and handling various urgent tasks, and ultimately saving a staggering 400 lives, including 54 innocent children.
