Intense weather system hit North Rhine-Westphalia: Rescue teams mobilized extensively - Rescue operations aplenty in North Rhine-Westphalia amidst the turmoil
Stormy skies rolled over North Rhine-Westphalia last night, setting emergency services on high alert across the region. As reported by the Paderborn fire department, they responded to a staggering 191 incidents between 7:30 PM and 5:00 AM, making it a especially busy night for them. The police, too, fielded over 400 emergency calls during the initial three hours starting at 7:00 PM. Thankfully, no injuries were reported according to a representative from the Paderborn police force.
The Technical Aid Relief organization lent a helping hand to Paderborn's emergency services, mobilizing approximately 150 personnel to manage the storm's aftermath. Main issues included flooded basements, activated fire alarms, and citizens in distress.
Fire department reports indicate that the roof of a production hall in Paderborn partially caved in under the sheer weight of the water, resulting in destruction of the building's sprinkler system. The local hospital, too, faced issues as water seeped into the building, causing issues with elevator operation. The university campus in Paderborn was also impacted, with numerous items suffering damages.
Bielefeld and Detmold weren't left untouched as well. Media outlets claim a potential tornado struck Altenbeken, but the German Weather Service has yet to verify this information and is currently evaluating the situation.
Detmold's fire department handled five incidents overnight, with fallen trees, muddy roads, and obstructed traffic routes being the main concerns. The Bielefeld police force reported two weather-related incidents on the A3.
In Gymnich, the Rhein-Erft district, a house roof caught fire following a lightning strike. Nobody was injured, as noted by the local police.
