The Texas State Legislature is set to reconvene next week, marking the start of a special session to initiate the process of redrawing the state's congressional map, known as redistricting. This mid-decade redistricting push is part of a strategic effort by Texas Republicans, backed by President Donald Trump's political team and endorsed by Governor Greg Abbott, aiming to bolster Republican chances and secure their slim majority in Congress.

In a statement posted on Truth Social on Tuesday, President Trump expressed his belief that Texas isn't likely to turn blue "anytime soon" with the right candidate. He also spoke to Texas Republicans on the same day, a message that was first reported by Punchbowl News.

The White House is aggressively pushing a redistricting plan in Texas, with the aim to potentially flip two or three US House seats in the 2026 midterms. This ambitious goal is driven by the belief that Texas, a traditionally red state, presents a significant opportunity for the GOP to gain additional seats, even if it means making some currently safe districts slightly more competitive.

However, not all within Texas' GOP delegation are convinced. Some have expressed unease about the redistricting plan, with many Republicans privately skeptical that the party can pick up that many seats, with a pickup of two seats being seen as a more realistic target.
