Republican-dominated state deploys National Guard to Washington D.C., with Trump continuing his power grab over law enforcement
The deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., continues without a specified timeline for withdrawal. As of Tuesday afternoon, approximately 900 members of the National Guard, including military police, have been mobilized.
The Guard troops are currently assisting law enforcement at 10 Metro stations across the city, including L'Enfant Plaza, Gallery Place, Metro Center, and Union Station. This support includes helping to detain individuals briefly if necessary before handing them off to law enforcement, but they are not making arrests themselves.
The operation in Washington, D.C., is now being called the "D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force" by officials in charge. This task force has been instrumental in clearing 48 homeless encampments in the city, with four more being removed the previous day.
Several states have sent their military members to serve in the president's mobilization. Five states, including Louisiana, Ohio, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Mississippi, have already made commitments. South Carolina sent additional National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., on Thursday, making it the sixth Republican-led state to support President Trump's deployment.
Tennessee sent 160 troops to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, bringing the total number of troops ordered to the city to 2,021.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced a total of 465 arrests since August 7 in Washington, D.C., with 52 arrests on Monday night. However, no information about potential charges from the arrests has been provided.
Many of the mobilized National Guard members are unarmed, and no new information about their roles or status has been disclosed.
