Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears reorganizes team during her bid for Virginia's governorship
In the race for Virginia's gubernatorial seat, Democrat Abigail Spanberger appears to have a significant advantage over incumbent Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, according to a recent poll conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University. The poll shows Spanberger leading Earle-Sears 49% to 37% among registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.16 percentage points.
The poll results come as Earle-Sears' campaign has faced challenges in gaining traction against Spanberger. The campaign has recently undergone staff changes, with Will Archer, the former campaign manager, being demoted and transitioned to a role focusing on voter turnout in Northern Virginia, and political director Richard Wagner leaving the campaign. The staff shakeup occurs less than four months before the general election.
The staff changes were reported by The Washington Post, and Mark Harris, a general consultant for the Earle-Sears campaign, has stated that there is no immediate plan to announce a replacement for Archer as campaign manager. Harris believes there is a clear path to victory and emphasizes the need for high turnout, but acknowledges that the campaign is the underdog.
Meanwhile, Spanberger's campaign has seen a surge in fundraising. During the most recent reporting period, June 6 to June 30, Spanberger raised $4.3 million, compared to Earle-Sears' $2.4 million. Spanberger currently has $15.2 million in cash on hand, while Earle-Sears has $4.5 million.
Republicans have criticized Earle-Sears' campaign, stating it lacks discipline and consistency. However, Mark Harris believes there is a path to victory and reiterates that it is only the beginning of the fight. Harris notes that Gov. Glenn Youngkin won four years ago after starting the race behind, implying a similar potential outcome for Earle-Sears.
As the race heats up, both campaigns will be focusing on mobilizing their supporters and securing votes in the lead-up to the general election. With the staff shakeup and fundraising disparity, Earle-Sears faces an uphill battle against Spanberger in the race for Virginia's governorship.

- With the lead in the polls and a substantial financial advantage, Abigail Spanberger's campaign appears poised for success in the upcoming general election, despite Republican criticisms of Earle-Sears' campaign strategy.
