Republican Association of Attorneys General backs Katherine Robertson in the AG contest
In the upcoming Republican primary for Alabama Attorney General, set for May 19, 2026, Katherine Robertson has garnered significant attention. Robertson, the current chief counsel to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, has secured the endorsement of the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA).
Robertson has worked closely with Marshall on high-profile legal fights, including opposition to federal vaccine mandates and challenges to the Biden administration's interpretation of Title IX. Notably, she has also played a role in the state's development of a new execution method using nitrogen hypoxia.
Steve Marshall, the past chairman of RAGA, served as RAGA's chairman starting in 2022. The endorsement announcement praises Robertson as an exemplary attorney and member of the Alabama Attorney General's Office.
However, the endorsement and Robertson's campaign funding have sparked controversy. Katherine Robertson's campaign has received $1.1 million from First Principles Action, a Tennessee nonprofit. This social welfare nonprofit does not have to reveal its donors, leading to the money being labeled as 'dark funds' by her opponent, Jay Mitchell.
Mitchell, the Blount County District Attorney, has accused Robertson of relying on outside influence in the Alabama Attorney General race. He has further criticized the race for potentially involving outside influence, a concern shared by some political observers.
Despite these accusations, Robertson's campaign has not disclosed the source of the $1.1 million donation. As of now, there is no publicly available information about who donated this substantial sum.
The involvement of RAGA in the Alabama Attorney General race reflects the state's importance to the conservative legal movement. In the past 27 years, fewer than ten candidates have been endorsed by RAGA in open-seat races, making Robertson's endorsement an unusual step, especially as they rarely intervene in open-seat primaries. RAGA leaders cited Robertson's record in Marshall's office as the reason for her endorsement.
