Republican advocate explains why New Jersey is not solely a Democrat stronghold, as they strategize to change gubernatorial control

The race for New Jersey's gubernatorial seat in 2025 is heating up, with Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a congresswoman, and Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman, vying to succeed term-limited Democratic Governor Phil Murphy.

New Jersey, traditionally a blue state, has shown signs of a rightward shift in recent elections. For instance, Murphy's 2021 reelection was by a narrower margin compared to his initial term, and Democratic presidential margins have shrunk statewide in 2024 compared to 2020. Since 1989, the Garden State has elected governors from the party opposite the sitting U.S. president, and has not awarded three consecutive terms to the same party's governor since 1965.

Key issues shaping the election include local concerns and national political dynamics. Republican efforts, led by activists like Scott Presler, emphasize voter outreach in rural and suburban regions, focusing on themes like "America First," criticizing global spending, and promoting infrastructure and education investment within the U.S. Ciattarelli’s campaign also highlights "law and order," exemplified by choosing Morris County Sheriff Jim Gannon as his running mate.

A poll conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University in late July 2025 shows Sherrill leading Ciattarelli by about eight points (45% to 37%) among likely voters, though 16% remain undecided. The poll indicates that framing the race around local rather than national issues benefits Ciattarelli, especially among independents, but national issues currently disadvantage him. Both candidates have solidified support within their party bases, though Ciattarelli’s support is slightly less firm among Republicans than Sherrill’s is among Democrats.

The political landscape is competitive and could hinge on turnout in key rural counties, the impact of national political narratives (including reactions to Trump’s influence), and the candidates’ abilities to appeal beyond their traditional bases. The race is closely watched as a potential bellwether for broader midterm and presidential election dynamics.

In this closely contested race, every vote could make a difference. Stay tuned for updates as the election approaches.
