Representatives from the alliance district of Podkarpackie visiting the regional parliament of Saarland
In a significant step towards bolstering their partnership, the Landtag President of Saarland, Heike Winzent, recently hosted a delegation from the Polish partner region, Podkarpackie, at the Saarland State Parliament.
The visit, which marked a continuation of the lively ties between the two regions, expanded to various sectors, including education and environmental initiatives. The University of Applied Sciences, the German-Luxembourgish Schengen Lyceum in Perl, and the European Academy Otzenhausen were all included in the delegation's itinerary.
One of the key highlights of the visit was the ecological school camp Spohns House in Gersheim. Serving as the central office of the German-Polish Youth Work, this camp also serves as a meeting place for German-Polish and German-French youth. Another important stop was the European Monument, where the Polish delegation paid their respects.
The European Affairs Committee of the Saarland State Parliament had previously visited Poland from August 31 to September 3, 2024, and had extended an invitation to the Committee for International Relations of the voivodeship Podkarackie to Saarland. A joint meeting between the Committee for Europe and IPR Affairs of the Saarland State Parliament and the Committee for Foreign Relations, Tourism, and Location Marketing of the voivodeship Podkarackie was held during the visit.
Heike Winzent, in her address, emphasised the importance of a strong, united Europe in withstanding threats from outside. She also signed the Golden Book of the State Parliament during the delegation's stay.
The geographical location of the voivodeship Podkarackie, being a border region to Ukraine, makes it close to the ongoing Russian aggression. Despite this, the visit underscored the invaluable importance of Europe and the Weimar Triangle for the preservation of the values and prosperity of both regions.
The delegation, led by Jerzy Borcz, chairman of the regional council of the voivodeship Podkarackie, also visited institutions such as the Saarland Ministry, the Regional Parliament (Landtag), and local economic development agencies during their stay in Saarland. Several companies were also included in the delegation's program.
The visit by the delegation from the voivodeship Podkarackie is part of a mutual exchange between the two regions, aiming to foster greater cooperation and understanding. The ecological school camp Spohns House in Gersheim, with its role as a hub for German-Polish youth, is a testament to the enduring bond between Saarland and Podkarackie.
