Bernie Ecclestone's Mother-in-Law's Kidnapping Saga: A Twist Before Rio Olympics
While the FIFA World Cup was shining brightly in Brazil, Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone was dealing with a darker situation. His mother-in-law, Aparecida Shank Flosi Palmela, was reportedly kidnapped and held captive for over a week before being released last Sunday.
The kidnapping story began in São Paulo, where the 67-year-old Aparecida was seized. The Brazilian authorities declared that she was held captive in a house located in the city of Cotia, around 22 miles west of São Paulo. According to the official statement from the São Paulo State Security Office, she was found within the premises of the house.
The head of public security in São Paulo, Magino Alves Barbosa Jr., pointed out that the mastermind behind the kidnapping was not a surprise arrest as he was apprehended on Monday. Barbosa Jr. further stated that one of the first two individuals detained confessed to being a mentor for the group, but police had suspicions about his involvement from the beginning of the investigation.
Jorge Eurico Faria, a former president of the Brazilian Helicopter Pilots Association, was the third individual arrested in connection with the case. Faria had previously provided helicopter services to Ecclestone’s family in São Paulo and was acquainted with Aparecida Shanque Flo. He discontinued his association with the association following his retirement in March 2015.
In response to the arrests, a member of the anti-kidnapping unit of the city police urged the perpetrators to halt their activities in São Paulo, as they would be apprehended.
Ecclestone, a billionaire who has been deeply involved in motor racing for more than 50 years, vowed to continue leading Formula 1 until his death in a 2012 interview with CNN. Despite the prospect of high crime rates and other concerns, Rio de Janeiro was anxious to organize the upcoming Olympic Games.
The presence of crime, Zika virus, political corruption, economic woes, and doping scandals cast shadows of concern over the host nation's enthusiasm to conduct the Olympics.
