Report indicates that Liverpool is reportedly determined to acquire a promising young defender, after suffering defeat in the Community Shield.
In a strategic move to strengthen their defense, Liverpool FC has signed 18-year-old center-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma for a reported fee of £26 million plus add-ons. The towering defender, standing at 6ft4in, has already made a name for himself, having played 17 appearances in Serie A during the 2024-25 season and representing Italy’s U19 national team.
The Reds' interest in Leoni stems from the need to bolster defensive depth, especially considering that full-backs are expected to play aggressive roles, requiring center-backs capable of covering ground and recovering quickly. Although Leoni may not be the fastest or most agile defender yet, Liverpool's coaching staff believes his other defensive skills and potential can be developed through experience and training within their system.
The young defender will join the first-team setup immediately, serving as backup center-back depth behind established first-choice defenders. As it stands, Liverpool only has three senior center-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez (injured). With Gomez sidelined, the defense appeared to be especially susceptible, as demonstrated in their recent loss to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on penalties.
The signing of Leoni comes as no surprise, given Liverpool's reported pursuit of additional center-back reinforcements. AC Milan and Inter Milan are also reportedly interested in securing Leoni's services this summer. However, Liverpool is reportedly stepping up efforts to recruit another center-back, with Marc Guehi being a potential target. Despite Crystal Palace's reportedly high asking price, Liverpool is said to be "really serious" about signing the young defender.
Our website considers this transfer as a necessity for Liverpool, as both Van Dijk and Gomez have injury-prone records, and the ACL injury suffered by Van Dijk in the 2020/21 season was an exception to his generally faultless injury record. Arne Slot's side looked defensively suspect at times during the match, and it would be a significant oversight for Liverpool to head into the season with only three obvious center-backs.
With the addition of Giovanni Leoni, Liverpool aims to secure their defense both presently and in the future, integrating him directly into the senior squad to develop under the club’s coaching and playing style. As the season unfolds, fans can expect to see Leoni contributing to a more resilient and formidable Liverpool defense.
