Report Denies Claims of Venezuelan Migrant Death at 'Cruel' Alligator Alcatraz Site
In the heart of the Everglades, a new immigration detention center known as "Alligator Alcatraz" has sparked controversy since its establishment in early July 2025. Located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, the facility is operated by the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) under Governor Ron DeSantis's administration and functions in coordination with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through a state-federal partnership.
However, the detention center has been subject to criticism and lawsuits from environmental groups, civil liberties advocates, Native American tribes, and political opposition, largely pointing to questionable detainee conditions and environmental impact. Reports and community voices highlight fears for detainee safety and wellbeing, with some families expressing serious concern for their relatives' lives after detention at the facility.
The location deep in the Everglades, an environment with dangerous wildlife such as alligators and snakes, has generated alarm and descriptions of the site as harsh and potentially life-threatening for detainees. Critics describe the facility as makeshift and temporary, emphasizing risks from surrounding natural hazards along with the stress and conditions of detention itself.
On the other hand, Florida state officials and political supporters argue the center is a necessary and efficient response to immigration enforcement and deportation logistics, with deportation flights operating directly from the onsite airstrip.
A recent New York Magazine investigation exposes dire conditions at the detention center, including maggot-ridden food, overflowing sewage, lack of medical care, and reports of a hunger strike among detainees. These allegations have been supported by claims made by the family of Venezuelan migrant Luis Manuel Rivas Velásquez, who died under mysterious circumstances while in detention. Rivas' partner, Rosana Nádoz, alleges that Rivas died due to negligence by US authorities, as he was denied care despite persistent symptoms including fever and chest pain.
The situation inside the "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center has been described as a "humanitarian emergency" by Rivas' sister, Ada Yeniree Velásquez. The facility's lack of transparency has also drawn scrutiny from immigrant rights activists.
Despite these allegations, the United States Department of Homeland Security denies the death of Venezuelan migrant Luis Manuel Rivas Velásquez. Environmentalist groups have petitioned a federal court in Miami to shut down the detention center, citing its negative impact on the environment and the wellbeing of the detainees.
As of August 2025, the conflict of perspectives between supporters and critics of the facility remains prominent, with ongoing investigations and lawsuits. The future of "Alligator Alcatraz" and the treatment of its detainees remains a significant concern for many.
