In a significant display of cooperation, the Federal Police Inspectorate Hannover and PI Wolfsburg/Helmstedt jointly carried out a successful operation for the first time today, ensuring the safety and smooth running of the Bundesliga football match between VFL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Cologne.
The operation, which involved intensified cooperation to tackle special incidents, commenced calmly and without incident, as confirmed by Police Chief Inspector Marco von Rautenberg-Garczynski, the head of the Federal Police Inspectorate Hannover. This calm demeanour was maintained throughout the arrival phase and the return journey, despite some delays and train cancellations.
At the Wolfsburg main station, the arriving fans of both clubs were consistently separated by the police. Approximately 1,500 1. FC Cologne fans arrived by train, while 3,500 VFL Wolfsburg fans participated in a registered fan march from the old stadium on Elsterweg towards the Volkswagen Arena, accompanied by numerous officers.
The special challenge for both authorities was to safely accompany the fans of both clubs to the Volkswagen Arena. To meet this challenge, the Wolfsburg police was supported by approximately 400 officers, 8 police horses, and 4 police dogs, along with the riot police. The Federal Police deployed nearly 150 officers, including some from Uelzen, and 8 police dogs for the match. A police helicopter from Gifhorn with modern image transmission technology was also involved.
The leadership personalities involved in the joint action were the Federal Police Operations Commander from Hannover and the Police Operations Commander from Wolfsburg/Helmstedt. Both expressed satisfaction after the operation, with no incidents reported during the fan march or the football match.
