Shining the Light on a Third Trump Term: A Possibility or Red Herring?
"Rephrasing Information": Donald Trump's authorized store offers Trump 2028 caps for purchase.
Looks like the online store of U.S. President Trump is stirring up some buzz with its latest merchandise - sporty caps, trendy tees, and nifty coolers all emblazoned with "Trump 2028". The shop isn't keeping things subtle, with the cap description boasting, "Rewrite the rules with the high-crowned Trump 2028 cap."
But before you start planning your presidential road trip in 2028, know this: Under current U.S. constitutional guidelines, a third term for President Trump would be a tough sell. Why, you ask? Well, let's dive in and see.
Back in March, Trump hinted at the possibility of a third term, stating that many want him back in office. However, the road to a third term is paved with numerous hurdles. Trump could attempt an amendment to the Constitution to get rid of the two-term limit, but such a move would be grueling. For an amendment to pass, it would require the backing of 2/3 of the members of Congress or 2/3 of all states.
While the chances of adopting such an amendment before the 2028 elections are relatively slim, Republican Party member Andy Ogles has already introduced a bill to the House of Representatives that could pave the way for a president who's served two non-consecutive terms to run again.
Historically, only one U.S. president has served more than two terms - Franklin Roosevelt. The 22nd Amendment, which set the term limit, was ratified after his death in 1951. If you want to brush up on the specifics of the 22nd Amendment, head here.
So, while the prospect of a third Trump term is exciting for some, the odds remain stacked against it. Remember, as Trump himself said during the interview, "there are others" the President could use to keep his political future alive. But whether those "others" will lead to a third term or simply keep the controversy alive remains to be seen.
