The upcoming Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Regensburg has taken an unexpected turn due to an "abstract threat situation". Organizer Alexander Irmisch, speaking to news agency DPA, revealed, "There was a threat letter," adding that the security of attendees and deployment forces is paramount. Initial reports of the threat situation surfaced in the local newspaper, the Mittelbayerische Zeitung.
Contradicting Irmisch's statements, a spokesperson from the Bavarian State Criminal Office flatly denied any ongoing investigations: "There are no investigations ongoing in our house."
Adapting to Circumstances: Not a Lasting Course of Action
In consultation with the local police and city officials, Irmisch and his team decided to alter the event's plans for public safety. The route of the annual parade through the old town will be curtailed. The Domplatz will host a stationary event instead.
Irmisch clarified, "This is not a permanent solution, we're bending, but for this year, it is crucial that we maintain a safe environment."
Recent demonstrations during the Christopher Street Days nationwide have experienced an escalation in queer-targeted hostility. Kai Boelle, board member of the CSD Germany association, discussed this trend with DPA, stating, "We've seen a substantial increase in online threats." Additionally, groups of young right-wing extremists are inciting counter-actions. Boelle described the situation as "taking on a new quality." The police across Germany are acutely aware of the need to secure these demonstrations.
A similar incident occurred in mid-May during the Christopher Street Day celebration in Gelsenkirchen, which was abruptly cancelled due to an abstract threat situation shortly before commencement.
As of yet, Irmisch remains uncertain about the political spectrum from which the threat letter against the Regensburg CSD emanated. "I can't currently pinpoint its origin." He declined to disclose the letter's content, citing ongoing investigations.

- The community policy and employment policy of Regensburg should prioritize the safety of its residents, especially during events like the Christopher Street Day, given the recent escalation of queer-targeted hostility and abstract threat situations.
- The General-news and Crime-and-justice sectors must reflect on the political climate that allows for such threats to manifest, considering the ongoing investigations and the change in plans for Regensburg's CSD.
