Reopened Milano Police Investigation Regarding 1978 Leoncavallo Boy Murders Involving Fausto and Iaio
Those 1978 killings of Fausto and Iaio revisited once more
The chilling murders of Fausto Tinelli and Lorenzo "Iaio" Iannucci, two young activists killed on March 18, 1978 near the Leoncavallo social center in Milan, are back in the spotlight. A judicial decision by Judge Maria Idria Gurgo di Castelmenaedo has initiated a new investigation, accepting the request of Milan prosecutors Leonardo Lesti and Francesca Crupi.
This fresh examination is focusing its lens on far-right extremist circles, much like the one that was closed in 2000. The investigation is carrying forward three primary suspects: Massimo Carminati, Claudio Bracci, and Mario Corsi. The Milan prosecutors have recently accessed a Digos report in their ongoing probe.
Tacking the Case with a Fresh Perspective
The latest investigation begins with a thorough examination of the case files gathered over the years. This comprehensive review has prompted new checks to be conducted. Initially, the most compelling lead pointed towards far-right extremist groups from Rome who assumed responsibility via a leaflet. In the 2000 case filing, signed by Judge Clementina Forleo, it was noted that there were "significant elements" implicating the far-right, specifically against the suspects of the time: Massimo Carminati, Claudio Bracci, and Mario Corsi, who nevertheless remained mere suspects.
In light of these names and suspicions, the prosecution is embarking on this new journey to unravel the events of March 18, 1978. That fateful evening saw the brutal murders of the two left-wing activists by gunshots in Via Mancinelli, Milan. The in-depth investigations, which began around a year ago, faced a rough start as many judicial pieces of evidence from the past were hard to come by – from the elusive blue wool cap soaked in blood that wasn't Fausto's or Iaio's, to the eight bullets for which Judge Guido Salvini had suggested a "general comparative examination" with "the shots fired in similar episodes that occurred in the months preceding and following Rome, where other young left-wing activists were targeted."
