Renowned Theater and Opera Director Robert Wilson Passes Away

Robert Wilson, a groundbreaking figure in the world of theater and opera, has passed away at the age of 83 in his home in Water Mill, New York. His death was announced by his production company, The Watermill Center, and confirmed by Chris Green, President of the Robert Wilson Arts Foundation.

Wilson was known for his avant-garde, visually striking productions that revolutionized stage art through innovative use of light, movement, and set design. His work often incorporated visual arts, music, and technology in unconventional ways, pushing the boundaries of traditional theater and opera.

One of Wilson's most significant works is the four-and-a-half-hour opera "Einstein on the Beach," created with composer Philip Glass and choreographer Lucinda Childs. This groundbreaking production, which eschewed traditional narrative and emphasized visual rhythm, abstract tableaux, and emotional tone, is regarded as a landmark of 20th-century experimental performance.

Other notable productions include Shakespeare's "King Lear," Chekhov’s "Swansong," Virginia Woolf’s "Orlando,""The Black Rider," and August Strindberg’s "A Dream Play." These performances showcased Wilson's global reach, with performances in the US, Europe, and Russia.

Wilson co-founded the experimental theater company Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds in 1968, which served as a crucial platform for his artistic innovations. He also worked on the ambitious but unfinished opera "the CIVIL warS: A Tree Is Best Measured When It Is Down," for which he earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination in 1986.

Beyond theater, Wilson was a multi-disciplinary artist, serving as a sculptor, drawer, and furniture designer. He exhibited at venues like the Venice Biennale, winning the Golden Lion, and collaborated with pop icon Lady Gaga, designing sets for her 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and ARTPOP project.

Wilson's innovative use of lighting as a central dramatic element, treating light not just to illuminate actors but as a key "character" in his works, has influenced generations of theater and visual artists worldwide.

He was honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Europe Theatre Prize, Drama Desk Award, Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, Premio Ubu awards, Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, and the Golden Lion of Venice.

In addition to his artistic accomplishments, Wilson founded The Watermill Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities, reflecting his commitment to creative experimentation and collaboration.

Wilson's influence extended beyond the stage, shaping the landscape of contemporary theater and opera. His work will continue to be celebrated and studied by theater and opera enthusiasts worldwide.

The Commission, in honor of Robert Wilson's significant contributions to the arts, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, as his works often incorporated unconventional uses of technology. In a departure from his esteemed career in theater and opera, Wilson collaborated with pop icon Lady Gaga, demonstrating a keen interest in the realms of entertainment and celebrities.
