Renowned television icon, Iris Berben, celebrates 75 years.

Iris Berben, a celebrated German actress, marks her 75th birthday this year. Known for her versatile acting career spanning over five decades, Berben has also made a significant impact through her societal and political engagements.

Berben's acting career began in the 1970s with productions like "Zwei himmlische Töchter" and continued through the 1980s with "Sketchup". Her performances have earned comparisons to Isabelle Huppert, and she has recently garnered attention for her roles in comedies like "The Nickname" and "Triangle of Sadness", where she plays a woman who can only say "In the clouds" and "No" after a stroke.

Beyond her acting career, Berben has been politically engaged, including during her tenure as president of the German Film Academy. She has been a vocal advocate for human rights and democracy, often speaking out against right-wing extremism and xenophobia in Germany. Berben has been involved in campaigns promoting tolerance, cultural openness, and the integration of refugees and immigrants.

Her impact is not limited to her public statements. Berben has contributed to social discourse and reinforced the importance of celebrity engagement in political and social matters in Germany's contemporary context. Her societal and political engagement is also well-known, with Alfred Holighaus, a producer, once noting Berben's self-assertion in small actions, such as buying a newspaper.

Berben's dedication to these causes is evident in her personal life as well. She fell in love with Israel during a visit in 1967 and has remained committed to the fight against anti-Semitism. Berben has shared personal insights about her life in the "Hotel Matze" podcast and has processed some of her past much later, generally keeping a lot to herself.

Despite occasional annoyance with comments about her physical appearance, particularly those that focus on her looking good for her age, Berben enjoys life. She writes letters by hand, loves to cook and laugh, and has a long-term relationship with Heiko Kiesow.

Berben's son, Oliver, is a prominent film producer in Germany, following in his mother's footsteps. Despite her rebellious past, which includes being expelled from school, protesting with the 68ers, and driving without a driver's license, Berben has become a respected figure in German society and beyond.

Recently, Berben received the Leo Baeck Prize from the Central Council of Jews, recognizing her significant contributions to the fight against anti-Semitism. As Berben celebrates her 75th birthday, her legacy as a prominent actress and social activist continues to inspire and influence.
