At the ripe age of 82, esteemed Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani shares his struggles with a grim health situation. In an intimate chat with Milan's celebrated newspaper "Corriere della Sera," Toscani reveals his diagnosis of amyloidosis - a condition characterized by proteins accumulating at critical body sites, hindering their function, and ultimately leading to deterioration. The condition, he laments, remains incurable.

The photographic legend, globally recognized for his daring advertising campaigns with Italian clothing brand Benetton in the 1980s, is visibly impacted by his illness. An image accompanying the interview showcases an alarming weight loss. Toscani confirms the substantial 88-pound drop, adding that the medication has altered his taste buds, leaving him unable to indulge in his beloved wine any longer.

The revelation of Toscani's ailment came to light during the summer, followed by a bout with pneumonia and Covid-19 in October. He recounts the experience as close to expiring, detailing vivid, hallucinogenic sensations.

Regarding his views on mortality, Toscani expresses a nonchalant attitude, "Death, if it's painless, doesn't phase me. I've led an extravagant life, filled with indulgence and unchecked freedom. I've never reported to a boss, nor collected a paycheck."

The prolific photographer served as Benetton's primary lensman for over a decade and a half, renowned for his controversial model choices - emaciated individuals, patients with AIDS, condemned inmates - thrusting him into public scrutiny. His partnership with the brand ended in 2020, following a brief reconciliation. Toscani's work further flourished in Germany, where he continued to exhibit his art.

Although the interview points to Toscani's ongoing health struggle, no recent updates have surfaced regarding his current treatment or recovery prospects.
