Renowned Linguist Anna Polivanova Passes Away at 80
Renowned linguist Anna Polivanova, a candidate of philological sciences, has sadly passed away at the age of 80. Known for her significant contributions to the field, Polivanova was an outstanding grammarian, as described by Anna Dybo, director of the Institute of Eastern Cultures at RSUH.
Polivanova's academic career spanned decades, during which she taught at Moscow State University and RSUH, training numerous young specialists and scientific personnel. Her most notable work includes a monograph titled 'Logical Foundations of Grammar. From Phonology to Semantics', which delved into questions of language structure, meaning, and the logic of grammatical constructions.
She also compiled a grammar and dictionary of Old Slavonic, widely used in university courses and research in Old Russian philology. Polivanova's passing follows another significant loss in Russian philological science, with researcher of ancient literature Aza Tago-Godi having passed away on September 8, 2025.
Anna Polivanova's impact on Russian linguistics is undeniable. Her dedication to the field, as reflected in her teachings and publications, will continue to influence future generations of linguists. The academic community mourns her passing and extends condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
