Renowned figure Arvind Mewar, once the ruler of Udaipur, passes at the age of 81.
Arvind Singh Mewar, a significant figure in the royal family of Mewar, passed away at the age of 81 in Udaipur. Mewar had been under medical care at his residence in the City Palace, where he succumbed to a prolonged illness.
Mewar was the chairman and managing trustee of the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, Udaipur, and played a crucial role in the administration of the City Palace complex. Built over centuries by the Maharanas of Mewar, the City Palace is a key historic and architectural landmark of the Mewar kingdom.
In addition to his career in hospitality, Mewar was a passionate sportsman. He was a skilled cricketer, debuting as Rajasthan's skipper in the Ranji Trophy in 1945-46 and playing for nearly two decades. Mewar also had a keen interest in aviation and was known for his solo microlite flights across India. He played an instrumental role in forming the Mewar Polo team, which won the prestigious President's Cup in 1991.
Mewar's contributions to arts and culture were also significant. He founded the 'Udaipur Cup' at the Cambridge and Newmarket Polo Club in the UK and was awarded the 'Royal of the Year' by Hello Magazine in 2011. In addition, he led several other trusts dedicated to cultural and philanthropic endeavours.
In observance of his passing, the Udaipur City Palace will remain closed for tourists on Sunday and Monday. A funeral procession will start from Shambhu Palace and move through prominent local landmarks, ending at Mahasatiya. The mortal remains of Arvind Singh Mewar will be kept at the City Palace from 7 am on Monday for public to pay their last respects.
Mewar leaves behind his wife Vijayraj Kumari, son Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, and daughters Bhargavi Kumari Mewar and Padmaja Kumari Parmar. His elder brother, Mahendra Singh Mewar, had predeceased him in November last year.
Mewar's international training paved the way for a successful career in hospitality, notably during his years in Chicago, before he established the HRH group of hotels as a professionally managed enterprise. In 2012, he received the VIII Annual Gala WT Institution Award for 'Contribution to Universal Culture' at the UN headquarters. In 2015, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 5th Annual Readers' Travel Awards by Conde Nast Traveller.
While detailed biographical or personal achievements about Arvind Singh Mewar are not extensively covered in the search results, his importance largely stems from his position within the Mewar royal lineage and his custodianship of its heritage properties and cultural patronage. Mewar was also involved in presenting awards and recognizing contributions to arts and culture, as seen in his presentation of an arts award to renowned crystal glass artist Dr. Vakar Hussain at the City Palace.
