Nick Saban, the iconic former coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, has found himself at the center of controversy after being chosen as a co-chair of President Donald Trump's proposed college sports commission. Yet, the legendary coach appears to be as puzzled as everyone else about the commission's function and purpose.

Last week, it emerged that Trump had planned to establish this body to scrutinize potential reforms in the college football universe, with Saban smack dab in the middle of the discussion. However, details surrounding the commission's objectives remain sketchy, even for the man himself, as Saban recently admitted on The Paul Finnebaum Show.

"To be blunt, I don't have a clue about this commission," Saban said, exposing his lack of knowledge about the project he's meant to be leading.

He further poured cold water on the plan, openly questioning its need, saying, "To put it simply, I'm not convinced we even need this commission."

Trump's plan seems to revolve around clamping down on the name, image, and likeness (NIL) era, which burst onto the scene in July 2021. Trump's move appears to be a response to the NCAA's allowed students to profit from their own brands since then. Saban, a vocal critic of the NIL funding, has reportedly lobbied the President on the issue along with his SEC rival and current Republican US Senator from Alabama, Tommy Tuberville.

Saban has consistently criticized the NIL era, particularly its impact on college football and the rise of the transfer portal, where thousands of students across various sports are seeking better opportunities – and, in some cases, bigger paydays.

"Every passing year has worsened the situation," Saban commented last December on The Pat McAfee Show. "First, we saw $3 million; everyone was delighted. The next year, it was $7 million; the following year, $10 million; and this year, $13 million. Now they're eyeing $20 million. Where does it stop?"

Speculation swirls around how a Trump executive order might impact the NIL landscape, but it's too early to tell what changes might be in store.
