Born in Croydon in 1938, Ahlberg was adopted into a working-class family living in Oldbury. Before becoming a teacher, he worked as a postman and gravedigger. It was at Sunderland Teacher Training College where he met his first wife, Janet, with whom he would collaborate on many of his books.

Ahlberg's legacy in children's literature is marked by storytelling that combines imaginative narratives with engaging, accessible language and playful formats. His works, such as "The Jolly Postman," "Funny Bones," "Burglar Bill," "Peepo!", and "Each Peach Pear Plum," are recognized as "mini masterpieces" that have lasting appeal for children and families, securing a place as true classics that continue to be loved across generations.

"The Jolly Postman," published in 1991, has sold over six million copies. The book, described by our website Culture as a book with wild and varied characters that brings joy to readers, won numerous awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal. Ahlberg's collaborations with his late wife Janet Ahlberg, an award-winning illustrator, are particularly noteworthy.

After Janet Ahlberg's passing in 1994, Ahlberg continued to work with other illustrators, notably Raymond Briggs. He later collaborated with his daughter Jessica for books like "Half a Pig."

Francesca Dow, head of children's literature at Penguin Random House, described Ahlberg's books as "mini masterpieces" that will be loved by children and families for years to come. Michael Rosen, a fellow children's author, paid tribute to Ahlberg, calling him a pioneer in great children's literature.

In 2014, Ahlberg made headlines for refusing a lifetime achievement award because it was sponsored by Amazon, which was facing criticism over its tax arrangements.

Ahlberg is survived by his wife Vanessa, daughter Jessica, and stepdaughters Saskia and Johanna. His contributions to children's literature will undoubtedly be missed, but his books will continue to bring joy and inspire young readers for generations to come.
