Renowned actor and filmmaker Robert Redford, who won an Oscar, passes away at the age of 89.

Robert Redford, the legendary Oscar-winning actor, director, and producer, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89.

The news of Redford's death was announced by Cindi Berger of Rogers & Cowan PMK in a statement. According to the statement, Redford died in his sleep at his home in Utah. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, Redford's film career spanned over six decades. His breakthrough came in 1969 opposite Paul Newman in the countercultural Western "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". This film marked the beginning of Redford's rise as one of the defining movie stars of the 1970s.

Redford's acting career was marked by a series of iconic roles in films such as "The Sting", "The Way We Were", and "All the President's Men". He made his directorial debut with "Ordinary People" in 1980, which won four Academy Awards, including best picture and best director.

Redford was not just a talented actor and director, but also a committed liberal and an outspoken critic of various social issues. He was a trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council and fought to preserve Utah's landscapes. He was also a vocal opponent of the Keystone XL pipeline.

In addition to his film career, Redford was the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, the leading showcase for independent film in the USA. He established the Sundance Institute in 1980 in the Rocky Mountains of Utah. The Sundance Film Festival has launched numerous successful films, including Reservoir Dogs, The Blair Witch Project, Donnie Darko, Fruitvale Station, and CODA.

Before his film career took off, Redford studied art and appeared on Broadway and in television. His passion for the arts remained with him throughout his life, and he used his influence to support and promote independent filmmakers.
