Renowned actor and filmmaker Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89, following his battle with bile duct cancer.
Robert Redford, the iconic actor known for his captivating performances and groundbreaking roles, has passed away. The news was confirmed by a spokesperson on Tuesday, 16th September, 2025.
Redford died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Sundance, the mountains of Utah. He was 87 years old.
Redford's career spanned over six decades, beginning with his Broadway debut in "Tall Story" in 1959. The adaptation of the play marked his film debut as well. His work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, Faye Dunaway, Meryl Streep, and Michelle Pfeiffer, cemented his status as a leading actor.
Throughout his illustrious career, Redford also ventured into directing. His directorial debut, "Ordinary People," won four Oscars in 1980. Some of his other notable directorial projects include "A River Runs Through It" with Brad Pitt in 1992 and "The Legend of Bagger Vance" with Will Smith in 2000.
In 2016, Redford admitted to feeling "tired" of his career and being an "impatient" person who no longer wanted to be in front of the camera as much. He told his grandson Dylan that he was considering retiring from acting. However, he continued to act in high-profile projects, such as "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019, "Omniboat: A Fast Boat to Fantasia" in 2020, and "White House Plumbers" in 2023.
Redford was married twice. His first wife, whom he was married to from 1958 to 1985, was Lola Van Wagenen. They had two surviving children, Shauna and Amy. Redford also had seven grandchildren.
In 2018, Redford announced his retirement from acting, but later walked back the statement. His wife, Sibylle Szaggars, survives him.
Redford's son, James, lost his battle to liver cancer in 2020. The official cause of Redford's death has yet to be revealed.
Redford's impact on the film industry and his influence on a generation of actors will undoubtedly be felt for years to come. His work, both in front of and behind the camera, has left an indelible mark on Hollywood.
