Düsseldorf Unveils Restored Schumann Residence as Musical Shrine
After a four-year renovation project, the city of Düsseldorf is gearing up to unveil the Schumann House as a museum dedicated to the famed musical couple, Robert and Clara Schumann. On November 24, officials offered a sneak peek of the revamped premises, set to open its doors to the public on December 1st.
Robert Schumann, the renowned composer, and his pianist wife, Clara, resided in the building for three years spanning 1852 to 1855, raising their brood of seven children in harmony. Miriam Koch, Düsseldorf's Councillor for Culture and Integration, expressed her sentiments, "There's no location more fitting to commemorate the life and artistry of Clara and Robert Schumann."
Creating an auditory and visual masterpiece, the museum will bring to life a third of Robert Schumann's compositions, including his celebrated "Rhenish Symphony." Underscoring the importance of sound in music, Sabine Brenner-Wilczek, the Heinrich Heine Institute Director, insists, "Not a note without a sound" - meaning that every piece of music on display will be audible.
100 Hand-picked exhibits from Düsseldorf's extensive Schumann collection will be available for exploration. The collection will periodically rotate, ensuring freshness and variety for visitors. Furnishing replicas of the Schumanns' iconic pieces will also be accessible, allowing visitors to interact with the past.
The extensive renovation and redesign of the Schumann House cost around €7.7 million, funded by the North Rhine-Westphalia state, private donors, and foundations respectively. The refurbishment of an historic property, while preserving its integrity and ensuring accessibility for all, presented a complex challenge.
