Renovated sports facility "The Hammer Forge" resumes operations
The modernized sports facility at "Am Eisenhammer" in Kupferdreh, a suburb of Essen, was officially reopened on September 13, 2025. The facility, which offers optimal conditions for training and matches, underwent a significant transformation following the 2021 flood.
Mayor Thomas Kufen expressed his gratitude to the planning offices and executing companies for creating an optimal sports facility. He stated that the city is investing in sports and sports facilities, a move aimed at honouring the work of local clubs and supporting their engagement, which is deemed vital for the city.
The modernized facility spans approximately 25,000 square meters and includes three artificial turf pitches: a combined football and hockey pitch, a hockey training field, and a football training field. The facility is equipped with a 20-meter-long tribune, a new LED floodlight system, an efficient drainage system, and redesigned vegetation areas for improved flood protection.
Mayor Kufen, along with VfL Kupferdreh 65/82 e.V. and the hockey department of HTC Kupferdreh e.V., were present at the reopening. He thanked the local clubs for their commitment and noted that the city's investment in sports facilities is a testament to their importance.
The city of Essen has allocated approximately 150 million euros for the construction and modernization of sports facilities between 2025 and 2027.
