Reno Omokri Faces ₦60 Billion Defamation Lawsuit by Nnamdi Kanu

In a significant legal development, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken legal action against Reno Omokri. The defamation suit was filed at the Enugu State High Court (Suit No. E/1034/2025) on August 1, 2025.

The lawsuit alleges that Omokri made malicious and prejudicial statements against Kanu, IPOB, and the Igbo tribe on July 6, 2025, via Omokri’s verified Twitter (X) account. The case is at the initial stage, having commenced by Writ of Summons under Order 3, Rule 3 of the Enugu State High Court.

Kanu's legal team is pressing for a series of reliefs, including a perpetual injunction restraining Reno Omokri from publishing or disseminating defamatory or prejudicial statements about Nnamdi Kanu without lawful justification. The writ of summons also includes a request for Omokri to tender apologies in national dailies for his defamatory publications.

The IPOB leader demands a total compensation of ₦60 billion from Omokri for the defamatory publications. This demand includes aggravated damages in the sum of ₦10,000,000,000.00 (Ten Billion Naira) for the malicious and reckless publication of false statements. Additionally, the suit seeks interest on all monetary awards at the rate of 10% per annum from the date of judgment until full payment.

Furthermore, the writ summons requests an order directing Omokri to publish a public apology to Nnamdi Kanu in two national newspapers and on Omokri's Twitter account within 7 days of the court's judgment. The apology should admit to the misrepresentation of facts regarding Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB, and #Ndigbo.

In a statement, Kanu's lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejimakor, commented that this is a muscular legal action against Reno Omokri seeking a retraction, apology, and damages for Omokri's defamatory publications. Ejimakor also called for others to take note and be guided, similar to Reno Omokri's actions.
