Rennes kicks off the French league by shocking second-place Marseille.
In the opening weekend of the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season, Rennes secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Marseille at Roazhon Park, thanks to a last-gasp goal from Ludovic Blas.
The match, played on August 15, saw Marseille start their campaign on a disappointing note, while Rennes managed to secure a morale-boosting opening victory. Despite playing with ten men for over an hour, Rennes held on to their lead, with Marseille failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Adrien Rabiot and Murillo both hit the post for Marseille, but it was not enough to prevent a 1-0 defeat. The winning goal was scored by Blas in the 90+1st minute, with Merlin providing the assist. The goal was shot with Blas's left foot from the right side of the field.
Meanwhile, attention now turns to the next round of matches, with Lyon kicking off their championship campaign on Saturday. Lyon, coached by Paulo Fonseca, will be away to Lens, while Paris Saint-Germain, led by Luís Castro, will face Nantes on Sunday.
If Paris Saint-Germain win their match, they could move three points clear at the top of the table, leaving Marseille playing catch-up in the early stages of the season. Despite their loss, Marseille will be hoping to bounce back quickly and get their season back on track.
