Remote Italian mountainside provides €100,000 incentive for relocation – with a twist
Why not move to Italy's Trentino region and transform an abandoned house into your dream home? The northern Italian autonomous province has a progressive plan to revitalize towns on the brink of extinction, including Val di Non, Val di Sole, and other scenic areas like ski resorts and picturesque villages.
This unique initiative offers individuals residing in Italy or abroad a €80,000 ($87,000) grant towards renovation costs and another €20,000 ($22,000) to help purchase the property. However, grants recipients must commit to living in the home for at least 10 years, and failing to do so may result in repaying the grant.
The eligible towns, expected to be finalized in April, are in dire need of a population boost due to depopulation issues. The project is part of the 2024 national budget law that aims to support municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. This funding aims to help towns with issues such as an elderly population, school closures, and a lack of amenities.
Rather than offering one-dollar houses as some regions, Trentino has allocated €10 million ($11 million) over the next two years to incentivize renovation and property purchase. By setting renovation costs to a maximum of €200,000 ($217,000), homeowners are responsible for covering up to €120,000 ($130,000) out of pocket, preventing individuals from constructing grand villas that clash with local village aesthetics.
The scheme also forbids the creation of short-term rentals, ensuring a steady flow of long-term residents in the target areas. The initiative is predominantly aimed at people 45 years or older who can provide a fresh, youthful energy to the designated towns. Plus, there is a limit of three property purchases per individual, preventing any one person from buying the entire village.
