Remnants of the uprising against the conservative movement
In the heart of Hamburg, on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, at 7 PM, the event titled "Nachtasyl Hamburg" will take place. This event, scheduled to take place at Nachtasyl Hamburg, Alstertor 12095 Hamburg, is a cooperation between the Institute for Protest and Movement Research and our website. Admission to the event is free, and registration can be done via the ticket portal.
The debate series, "Moving Conversations," aims to regularly address current protests and topics around social movements with experts and guests. This particular event will focus on discussing how protests can develop resilience and collective power for democracy and against right-wing extremism.
André Zuschlag, Editor of our website nord, will moderate the debate series. The guests for this event include Tanja Chawla, Chairwoman and CEO of DGB Hamburg, Noa Sander, Spokesperson for Alliance Resist, Nina-Kathrin Wienkoop, Board member at the Institute for Protest and Movement Research / HAW Hamburg, and others.
The discussion will delve into the outcomes and impact of the 2024 protests against right-wing extremism in Europe. Despite the protests, far-right extremism surged in countries like Germany, where the number of individuals affiliated with far-right extremist groups increased 23%. The far-right party AfD, promoting nationalist, xenophobic, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, became Germany’s second-largest party.
The debate will also explore how far-right extremist alliances hindered key EU initiatives, exacerbated social tensions and threats to minorities, and posed new national security concerns. It will further discuss strategies to build collective resilience and fortify democracy against extremist destabilization, such as strengthening democratic institutions, supporting inclusive, fact-based political dialogue, enhancing community and youth engagement programs, improving legal and security frameworks, and fostering transnational cooperation and civil society mobilization.
Doors for the event will open from 6:30 PM. Please note that personal data may be transmitted to third-party platforms when using external content. We encourage everyone to attend this important event and engage in thoughtful discussions about the future of our democracy.
