Remnants of a missile discovered in Poland a week following Russia's widespread airspace incursions, according to authorities.
In recent developments, several countries in Eastern Europe have been affected by ongoing events related to the war in Ukraine, with Russia, Poland, Latvia, Romania, and NATO all playing significant roles.
In a notable incident, military police in Poland discovered missile fragments, possibly from a weapon used to shoot down a Russia drone, in Choiny, approximately 70 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. A forensic investigation is currently underway to determine the origin of these fragments.
Meanwhile, a piece of a tail section of the Gerbera drone was found near the western village of Varve in Latvia. The Latvian Defense Minister, Andris Spruds, has coordinated efforts to determine whether this fragment is one of the drones previously detected in Poland. In response to this discovery, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has emphasized the importance of strengthening the eastern border and protecting the Baltic Sea coast by installing necessary sensors.
The Gerbera drone, a decoy drone designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses, has a flight range of up to 600 kilometres. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the formation of the Eastern Sentry programme in response to the Russia drone incursions. The programme aims to deter further Russia incursions and show solidarity with Poland.
Warsaw confirmed that Polish and allied aircraft shot down at least three Russia drones during the incursion into Polish airspace. Pieces of a missile, possibly used to shoot down the drone, were found in Poland.
Romania has also condemned what it calls Moscow's 'irresponsible actions' after a Russia drone allegedly entered its airspace during an aerial attack on Ukraine.
The incidents come more than a week after over 19-23 drones violated Poland's airspace overnight into 10 September, allegedly launched from Russia.
In light of these events, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has instructed the defence and interior ministries to coordinate with Warsaw to establish whether the found drone is one of those detected last week.
These developments underscore the ongoing tensions in the region and the need for NATO and its member states to remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any further Russia aggression.
