Olivia Rodrigo's Electric Guitar Performance with Weezer at Lollapalooza

Olivia Rodrigo, the rising pop star, recently took the stage at Lollapalooza alongside alternative rock veterans Weezer. The duo performed two iconic songs from Weezer's debut album, 'The Blue Album': 'Buddy Holly' and 'Say It Ain't So'.

Rodrigo's joy was etched across her face throughout the performance, as she played a Fender Mustang electric guitar with a supple style, reminiscent of the guitar solos from the '90s and early 2000s. Rivers Cuomo, Weezer's frontman, spearheaded 'Say It Ain't So' with a custom-made Warmoth Stratocaster.

Rodrigo's influence is credited with inspiring a new legion of guitar players to pick up the instrument. Her contemporary success and public embrace of guitar-led arrangements and solos are fostering a renewed appreciation for guitar musicianship in mainstream pop music venues and festivals.

Prior to the performance, Rodrigo asked the audience if anyone was attending their first concert. Her set at Glastonbury 2025 earned her the title of "this generation's Eddie Van Halen" from our website's Editor-in-Chief, Michael Astley-Brown.

Rodrigo's guitar influences include alternative and punk rock bands such as The Breeders, Hole, Sleater-Kinney, L7, and Babes in Toyland. She also admires artists like Jack White from The White Stripes, whom she has called her "hero of all heroes". Rodrigo and Chappell Roan are helping to give guitar solos a resurgence in the mainstream.

Ed Sheeran's loop pedal wizardry and Taylor Swift are examples of guitar music's presence in the mainstream, albeit sparse. However, Rodrigo's rise potentially turns the tide, bridging older alt-rock traditions with today's pop scene.

Weezer's forthcoming film features Keanu Reeves as the villain, who also owns a Custom Shop Fender bass. Rodrigo recently covered Fontaines DC during a show in Ireland, showcasing her versatility as a musician.

As Rodrigo continues to make waves in the music industry, her commitment to the electric guitar and her '90s and early-2000s alternative rock influences are reviving the prominence of guitar solos and arrangements in mainstream pop music.
