Currently- and Future-Bound Generations Urged to Recall Church Duties on May 8th - Reminder issued to current and upcoming generations: Churches underscore the significance of their duty

May 8th holds deep significance in Germany, marking the end of World War II in Europe. This day is far from a celebration, but rather a time for solemn reflection and introspection.

Kirsten Fehrs and Georg Bätzing, leading figures, called the liberation day "not just a day of liberation, but the dawn of a new, better time - a time of reconciliation, peace, European unity, and transatlantic friendship." However, they also highlighted the responsibility that comes with this new beginning, warning against any attempts to revive the spirits of violence and human hatred.

On this day, Germany recalls the horrors of the past, the dark shadows of totalitarianism that nearly destroyed civilization. They understand the fragility of democracy and the importance of standing firm against any forces that threaten its existence.

The President of the social association VdK, Verena Bentele, emphasized the importance of remembering the victims of the war and the Nazi dictatorship. She urged vigilance against any form of discrimination, exclusion, or devaluation of people, reminding us that diversity is a valuable asset worth defending.

Bernd Fabritius, President of the Federation of Expellees, added a poignant note. The 8th of May 1945 might have been a day of liberation, but for many, it was not a day of freedom. Around 15 million Germans were on the run or violently expelled from their ancestral homeland. Remembering the end of the war, therefore, also includes remembering the victims of flight, expulsion, and communist repression.

This day serves as a constant reminder of the price of ignorance, regret, and apathy. It's a call to action, reminding us to stand strong, to defend our values, and to ensure that the sacrifices made during World War II were not in vain. Remember, never again!
