Remembrance Gathering Commemorates Tragic Sinking of Submarine "Kursk" on Anniversary Date
Twenty-five years ago today, the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea, resulting in the tragic loss of all 118 crew members on board. In remembrance of this tragic event, a memorial event was held in Nizhny Novgorod, the home port of the Kursk.
The memorial event took place at the Nizhny Novgorod cemetery "Marinoe pole," where three of the five sailors from the city are buried. Among them are Captain-Lieutenant Sergei Lubushkin, Midshipman Yevgeny Gorbunov, and Senior Midshipman Vladimir Svetchkov.
Despite extensive searching, there is no specific information available about the memorial event in Nizhny Novgorod this year. Typically, such events involve commemorations honouring the sailors, moments of silence, and the laying of flowers or wreaths.
The Kursk, a formidable nuclear-powered submarine, met its fate off Russia's northern coast in the Barents Sea. The sinking of the Kursk remains a sombre reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve in the Russian navy.
