Remembering the fallen soldiers from the First World War in Krasnodar was celebrated
In the heart of Krasnodar, a city in southern Russia, a monument stands tall, a testament to the bravery and historical significance of the Cossacks and highlanders who fought in World War I. The "Glorious Sons of the Fatherland: Cossacks and Highlanders - Heroes of World War I" memorial was unveiled in 2016, symbolising the friendship and mutual aid of all the peoples of the Caucasus.
Alexander Vlasov, the Deputy Governor of Krasnodar Krai and Ataman of the Kuban Cossack Host, stated that events such as this are organized to strengthen the memory of the people, particularly among young generations. The initiative for these commemorations comes from Vladimir P. Gromov, the first Ataman of the revived Kuban Cossack Host.
Gromov emphasized the loyalty of Cossacks as defenders of the Motherland during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, including World War I. He also highlighted the glory and military power of the Cossacks during the same time period.
During World War I, over 100,000 Cossacks from the North Caucasus were sent to war. These Cossacks were not subject to conscription but still went to the front as volunteers. They served as crucial cavalry units in the Russian Imperial Army and also in associated forces like the Persian Cossack Brigade. Notable Cossack leaders such as Pyotr Krasnov commanded brigades and corps during the war and later became prominent figures in the subsequent Russian Civil War.
The memorial rally held at the site brought together Cossacks, veterans of the SVO (Special Military Operation), and cadets. The participants observed a minute of silence and laid flowers at the monument, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by these brave men and women.
State Duma Deputy Dmitry Pirog noted that Russia has many such dates from the tsarist era when Cossack and highlander brothers stood together to defend the country's interests and protect its borders.
As Russia marks 111 years since its entry into the military conflict on August 1, the "Glorious Sons of the Fatherland: Cossacks and Highlanders - Heroes of World War I" memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the Cossacks and highlanders during a time of great hardship. The monument stands as a symbol of Russia's military heritage and the continued recognition of the Cossacks' historical role in its conflicts.
