Remco Evenepoel triumphs in the time trial stage five of the Tour de France, Pogacar grabs the yellow jersey, and Jonas Vingegaard experiences a setback by losing time
Remco Evenepoel Wins Tour de France Stage Five Time Trial
Remco Evenepoel, the Belgian cyclist racing for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, claimed victory in the fifth stage of the Tour de France, a 31.5-kilometer individual time trial. Evenepoel's time of 37 minutes and 56 seconds was 33 seconds faster than Edoardo Affini, who led for most of the day.
Evenepooel's impressive performance saw him outpace his closest rivals, including Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar, who currently leads the general classification, was faster than both Evenepoel and Vingegaard at the first time check, but Evenepoel's superior speed in the latter part of the race secured his victory.
In the overall standings, Pogacar maintains his lead, with Evenepoel trailing by 42 seconds. Kévin Vauquelin of Arkéa-B&B Hotels is in third place, 1 minute and 44 seconds behind Pogacar.
Evenepoel's time trial victory marks his second consecutive win in this discipline at the Tour de France, having also claimed the stage five title last year. His dominance in time trials has been unbroken since the final stage of the 2024 Tour.
Unfortunately, Evenepoel's 2025 Tour de France campaign was cut short, as he had to abandon the race after about a week. In the 2024 Tour, Evenepoel achieved a podium finish, placing third overall and winning the individual time trial (stage 7).
Other notable performances in the time trial stage include Bruno Armirail, who finished fifth, 35 seconds behind Evenepoel, and Ben O'Connor, who set a relatively impressive time to finish 11th overall, 1 minute and 14 seconds down on Edoardo Affini.
With the fifth stage complete, the Tour de France continues to unfold, with the riders set to face more challenges in the days ahead.
